I personally feel that the issue with climate change lies in the fact that people don't think that their individual actions can make a change, and in a way that is true; individually, the results of a lot of our actions are negligible. It is the culmination of our effort that leads to real, tangible change.
However, some people are caught in the trap of just saying "Oh I'll just drop this piece litter, because it won't hurt the environment THAT much". With enough people undertaking this line of thinking, it is also enough to make a tangible, but this time, negative impact, on the planet.
Making people realise the consequences of their actions, and realise that it is the culmination of our actions, whether it be negative or positive, that impacts the planet, is one of the most important parts of raising awareness for climate change, and every kind of environmental issue altogether.
There are so many things being done already to counteract climate change, but they are simply not getting enough exposure, and the organisers of these events are not utilising social media to its full, powerful extent, especially considering the amount of youth that is using social media these days. Considering the fact that a lot of the physical change and work that is done comes from teenage volunteers, and that these teenagers are the future to environmentalism, this is detrimental to conservation and the environment as a whole, if the movement doesn’t survive to the next generation.
More events like tree planting events, or reserve restorations should be held, and made out to sound fun, and interesting, and I feel like these events really do help people get engaged because they feel like they are a part of something bigger; a team, an organisation, and that the things that they are doing really ARE making a tangible difference.
All in all, I would say that the issue lies within people not recognising that it is the culmination of our actions that cause consequences, and that raising awareness, and opening the eyes of people to the fact that they can really make a big difference working in a group is a great way to go about raising awareness. Better and more comprehensive usage of social media to reach out, and get people interested is a great place to start.
