STORY CONTINUES

Generation Zero, a youth-led climate change organisation, last week launched a campaign aimed at reducing carbon emissions. They want the Government to introduce a Zero Carbon Act, which will hold future Governments to account on carbon emissions targets.

The idea is based on a similar law currently in place in the UK. It would work by requiring future governments to set five year ‘carbon budgets’ on track to the zero carbon target, and then make plans to meet these. It will set up an independent Climate Commission whose role is to provide expert advice on targets and policies and to monitor the Government’s progress. You can find out more about the proposed law here - http://zerocarbonact.nz/

What do you think? Does New Zealand need a better legal framework to combat the causes of climate change? Are our politicians doing enough? And do ordinary New Zealanders know enough about climate change, or do we need more education and public awareness campaigns?

You can have your say now by participating in our test poll on climate change. Thanks for making sure your voice is heard!
